What does Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii (RMHC-HI) do?

RMHC-HI is a non-profit organization with a mission of assisting seriously
ill children and their families. It conducts programs that provide a wide
spectrum of support for them.

How does RMHC-HI address families’ needs?
-
RMHC-HI provides two Ronald McDonald Houses with a total of 17 guest rooms,
and a respite and support center inside Kapiolani Medical Center for Women
and Children known as the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Family Room.

How do the Ronald McDonald Houses assist families?
-
While on Oahu for a child’s medical treatments, families may stay at a Ronald
McDonald House and receive comfortable and secure accommodations that include
a fully-stocked kitchen, pantry and laundry room. They are also provided with
transportation to and from hospitals; Internet access; and their own cell
phone to use while they are staying at the House.

How does the Ronald McDonald House Family Room help families?

The Family Room provides a place of respite and support for family members of
children being treated at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. It
includes a kitchenette, refreshments, living room, Internet and computer
stations, phones, a game room for the kids, and more. It is heavily utilized
by Oahu families with children being treated on an inpatient basis.

Who can stay at the Ronald McDonald House?

Families required to travel to Oahu for a child’s needed medical treatments
may temporarily reside at one of two Ronald McDonald Houses in Honolulu.
RMHC-HI also accepts high-risk pregnancy moms from the neighbor islands. All
guest families are referred to RMHC-HI by medical practitioners, social
workers or insurance companies.

How much does it cost families to stay at the Ronald McDonald House?

Families are asked to contribute $20 per night if they are able; however no
families are denied service because of an inability to pay the nominal room
fee. The balance of the actual cost to offer the accommodations and services is
paid for by the contributions of individuals, businesses and foundations.

Where do the families RMHC-HI serve come from?

Virtually everywhere. However, most families staying at the Ronald McDonald
Houses are from the Neighbor Islands, while the majority of those served by
the Family Room are Oahu residents.

What kinds of conditions do the children suffer from?
-
While many of the child-patients are being treated for birth-related conditions, the House also supports families whose children are fighting cancer, heart problems, organ failure, major physical trauma, and other life–threatening conditions.

How many people does RMHC-HI assist each year?

Through its Ronald McDonald House program, RMHC-HI helps approximately 400
families each year. That is about 950 individuals. The average number of
people visiting the RMH Family Room each year is nearly 9,000.

Do you have medical staff at the House?

No. Ronald McDonald House does not offer medical services.

How long has the Ronald McDonald House existed in Hawaii?

The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Honolulu in March, 1987.

Where are you located?

Main offices for RMHC-HI are located at the Ronald McDonald House, 1970 Judd
Hillside Road, in Oahu’s Manoa Valley. The second Ronald McDonald House is
located nearby, at 2868 Oahu Avenue.

Where do you get your funding?

RMHC-HI is a private non-profit that relies on contributions from the
communities it serves to fund its assistance programs.

Is RMHC-HI operated by McDonald’s Restaurants?

No, while RMHC-HI has a great partnership with McDonald’s, and they support
many of our fund-raising efforts, we continue to depend on the donations of
individuals, businesses and foundations in Hawaii to operate. Volunteers
from the community also add important contributions of time and talent.

Who can volunteer?
-
RMHC-HI requests that volunteers are 14 years and older. Exceptions may be
made if there is a parental guardian with those under 14.
